Founded in 2010, RaisingHealth is a community health organization in Sunset Park, Brooklyn creating a local system of accessible care for low-income immigrant New Yorkers. Its mission is to support and sustain the wellbeing of underserved communities through culturally competent health, education, and community-building programs. RaisingHealth addresses longstanding disparities in health and social services, fills gaps in care that underserved communities face, and ensures the local community gets the support they deserve.

Leadership

Liderazgo

Hewett Chiu, MPA, FAHM, is RaisingHealth's President & CEO and co-founder. He also serves as an adjunct professor of health administration at NYU Wagner and previously served as Executive Director at the NYC Department of Health & Mental Hygiene, where he oversaw the city's public mental health and primary care clinical integration initiative — the largest of its kind in the country. He co-founded RaisingHealth after losing his mother to cancer and watching his family navigate a fragmented health system as immigrants.

WHAT — RaisingHealth's 11th annual Health Empowerment Celebration is a free community event that aims to connect Sunset Park community members with much-needed health resources and screenings while also celebrating and uplifting health and wellness through cultural performances and family activities.

WHY — RaisingHealth is partnering with over 40 local community social service organizations, elected officials, and government agencies to spread awareness of the local health resources and services available to low-income, uninsured immigrant community members. This annual multicultural community gathering typically serves over 1,000 individuals, with a schedule that includes cultural performances, a distribution of fresh groceries, and activities for the whole family, all for free.

Access shouldn't depend on insurance, income, or immigration status. We'd like to see that same standard of access extended by health systems and payers well beyond a single day.
In-language care makes a measurable difference. We encourage continued investment in bilingual, culturally grounded staff — not just translation services — across the providers our community relies on.
Community input strengthens program design. We encourage funders and city agencies to involve immigrant community members early, when services are still being shaped.
Consistent, year-round investment matters as much as a strong event. We're grateful for our partners' support at HEC, and we're always glad to deepen that partnership across the full year.
